I think I sensed it before I heard it and I certainly heard it before I saw what had happened because when I turned around from my ironing he was already half way across the garden crying and running with a surprising amount of speed considering he was clutching one knee.
I am happy to confirm that what everyone says is true; if a toddler learns to ride a bike by first riding a pedal-less / balance bike they graduate to riding a pedal bike easily and naturally. It is quite impressive actually and my husband and I stood smiling proudly as our young son rode confidently around on his new bike for the first time.
However....
No amount of balance training quiets the dare devil that lives comfortably in a young boy's heart. My few short years of mothering has taught me this. So, when he came running in from his bike with a very scratched knee I quickly enlisted a collection of remedies from my healing cupboard where they wait on guard for such a moment.
Rescue Remedy - to calm his distress
Hydrogen Peroxide - to clean the wound
Lavender Essential Oil - to allay pain and heal
Arnica 30 - for bruising and swelling
and Santa Clause...?
Santa Clause is filled with a gentle healing ointment.
I make a wonderful healing ointment here in my kitchen. It is magnificently healing and very easy to make.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup olive oil
1/4 cup lanolin
1/8 cup wheat germ oil
1/8 cup raw honey
1/2 tsp vitamin E oil
15-20 drops lavender essential oil
1 Tbsp ground dried chickweed
1/2 Tbsp ground dried chamomile
1/2 Tbsp ground dried calendula
(add 1/2 Tbsp comfrey
1/4 cup grated beeswax
Method:
~Add essential oil and honey.
If you cannot harvest fresh herbs it is perfectly fine to buy them dried. I do so from here:

This sounds lovley. I may have to whip up a batch. Thanks for sharing.
The salve looks great. I bet having healing balm applied to your knee direct from Santa would make you feel better immediately!
that's a wonderful remedy. Personally, we just use nettle cream. It works for everything from burns to scrapes and insect bites. I also use it on mosquito bites. It both pulls all the bad stuff out and calms the swelling, etc. I always keep at least 2 tubes in the house for in case.
And then of course there is the magic kiss and hug from mommy. I think almost any remedy will do as long as it is applied by mommy with love.
I used to make something similar but it has been years since I have done this. That's why I love your blog. You're inspiring me to return to the person I used to be before I had kids. And I've given you an award. Come here to claim it. http://www.breastfeedingmomsunite.com/2010/07/purposefully-self-absorbed/
I never knew about balance bikes... but I am such a believer in them. My oldest is just 4 and learned to ride a bike a couple months ago... and my daughter is 2 (3 in 2 months) and is riding a pedal bike like a champ! She doesn't do well with the braking, but is working on it... that is why I may need to make that salve! Thanks
